Boba or bubble tea, as we all know is coming from Taiwan. Originally, there are only classic boba tea using black tea base and black boba pearls. But the world of bubble tea has changed as more brands are combining new elements in like fruity based bubble tea.

What’s dragon fruit

The main role of this dragon fruit milk tea is the dragon fruit. You may know other names like pitaya. My husband grow cactus and we even have dragon fruit in our backyard.

It has a vibrant colorful skin with speckled flesh. The most popular types including the white flesh and red flesh.

You may wonder the taste of dragon fruit. To me, it is mild with an acceptable sweetness and a very faint flora coming from the plant. It is a little bit harder than kiwi but softer than pear.

The tea base

I choose to use jasmine green tea as the tea base of our dragon fruit boba or dragon fruit milk tea because it has a light floral flavor which will work well but not overpowering the taste of dragon fruit.

In addition, it has a light yellow color which will not influence the color of this summer drink.

Ingredients for a homemade dragon fruit boba

  • 1/2 cup of dragon fruit
  • 1 tbsp. simple syrup
  • 1 cup of hot water
  • Jasmine green tea
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • ice cube
  • Boba

Tools you will need

  • Serving glass cup
  • Large bubble tea straw
  • Tea strainer
  • Teapot cups
  • Fruit juicer

How to make dragon fruit boba

Steep the jasmine green tea

Add around 1 cup of hot water (around 80 degree C) to jasmine green tea. Steep for around 5 minutes. Strain the tea liquid, I love to add 3 ice cubes to cool the tea liquid quickly. You can use jasmine green tea bag for a shortcut.

Mix dragon fruit and tea base

Add dragon fruit and the cooled tea liquid to the juicer, blend until very smooth. This is our basic dragon fruit tea base.

Assemble

Add boba, ice cubes, syrup, and milk into the serving glass cup. I recommend only a small amount of simple syrup because the dragon fruit has sweetness itself. For sweet teeth, you may double the syrup.

Finally pour dragon fruit and tea liquid, you will see that the color becomes very beautiful. Plug in the straw, now you can enjoy this wonderful dragon fruit boba tea.

Cook the boba pearls

You may choose the regular black boba pearls or making some at home. In this recipe, we will need cooked boba pearls.

Bring a large pot of water to a boil and then add the boba pearls. Heat over the high-middle fire and cook for around 15 minutes until the boba peel floats on the surface. Turn off the heat, cover the lid, and let it stay for another 15 minutes. Then strain under running water and coat with syrup or sugar.

You may buy quickly boba pearls which only requires 5 minutes boiling and 5 minutes resting.
